T3/T25 Sunroof Kits

T25/3 Sunroof kits

At last, after several years in the planning, it's done. The Type 25 Bus Sunroof kit is finally available. Now you can pamper your pride and joy with the sunroof you have always wanted. So why did it take so long?

Well take a look at the roof profile of the VW T25 van and you will see that it presents a few unique challenges, which took us a while to figure out a solution. So, what did we come up with for owners. After much research and testing, we decided upon two solutions. One for T25's that have unmodified roofs and a second solution for T25's that already have a hole. Result, two standard size kits plus a custom option for owners of pop top T25's who's hole does not conform to our two standard sizes. So, a set of solutions to make most owners happy. At last you can treat your pride and joy to a sunroof.

Vinyl Cover Colour Change. The standard material  is a heavy duty BLACK  vinyl. Alternative colours are available as follows, White, Beige, Tan, Putty, Blue, Red, Wine, Green and Grey. See colour chart in the Gallery. The cost of upgrading to a colour vinyl is £50 for kit 1 and £70 for kit 2, all coloured vinyl must also have the lining option.

Outer Material Change. There is also an option to upgrade the standard black vinyl cover to a mohair/polyester mix of cloth. A similar material to what's used on Mercedes/BMW convertible hoods. The cost is standard price, plus £150 for kit 1, £190 for kit 2. Colours are Black, Beige, Blue or Brown.

Deluxe Interior Lining Option. A very popular upgrade is to have the cover lined on the inside with a headlining. This upgrade doubles the layers of the cover, making it better insulated and more importantly visually attractive too. Standard kits DO NOT include a headliner and will look bare by comparison. Choose this deluxe upgrade for a superior finish as it gives the cover the factory touch. Around 80% of customers choose this upgrade.  Interior upgrade for kit 1 £100 and kit 2 is £120. will be similar. Choice of 2 colours: Off-white or Black.

F.A.Q's

I want a kit but am a little confused with all the options ?
No worries, all this information can seem a little daunting. Just give us a call/contact us through e-mail and we will help you out.

What comes in a standard kit?
Each standard size kit will contain everything you need for the installation of the actual sunroof. The parts are as follows.
1 x Sunroof cover in black vinyl (with unlined interior), Aluminium frame, 2 x lengths of angled steel, flat aluminium bar slats that span the aperture, nylon end fittings, locking knobs x 2, rubber seals, fittings and build manual. A Custom sized kit may contain different parts according to different requirements.

Where are the sunroofs located on the roof?

Kits 1 and 2, sees both holes located within certain obvious boundaries on the roof. Take a close look at the roof of your T25 and you will see four pressed steel channels set widthways across the roof. Kit 1 is located between channel 1 and channel 3, making this hole more or less in-line with the side sliding door, Kit 2 starts from the same place, but goes further back, finishing just before the 4th channel.

How long does the kit take to fit?

This depends on what your VW T25 roof is like and the kit being fitted, Prep work for the hole will depend on what you have on the roof, removing a pop top can take a few hours for instance. The fitting of the small sunroof kit will take around 2-3 hours once the hole has been cut and prepared. The larger kit No.2 and a custom size kit will take a little longer.

How does it all work?

The "guts" of this kit is exactly the same as our famous T2 sunroof kit, which has stood the test of time over the last 20+ years and has sold all over the world in huge numbers. They have proved very popular with customers because they are unique, good value and very easy to fit. It's amazingly simple to install, to use and to maintain. Basically an aluminium frame is pop rivetted into a hole, several cover support slats span the hole, these have nylon end fitting for a smooth travel along the frame. The cover is secured ingeniously with "snaps" and then locked in place with two small locking knobs. The knobs keep the sunroof locked both open and closed. We have sold thousands of these kits all around the world, they are very easy to install and use.

What experience do I need to fit a T25 sunroof kit?

85-90% of the kit is easily completed with simple hand tools (power drill, pop rivet gun, etc) and some good general knowledge is all that is required. A good DIYer should be proficient enough to tackle most of the job successfully, however there is a small portion of welding required to complete the kit, so specialist help maybe required for this bit. Maybe a mobile welding service. Customers who don't have the time or the energy have these kits fitted at body shops or independent VW garages.

What about structural support for the new hole?

Yes, big holes require some support. The shorter Kit 1 will not disturb any of the main roof supports, but steel sections (not supplied) need to be fixed underneath the new framework. The longer Kit 2 will require the removal of a support bar and reinstallation further back. This is a very easy job for anyone with a little welding experience. DO NOT WORRY, these strengthener have been removed on thousands of T25's around the world and as long as you put the steel back at the end of the new hole, there are no issues. It is very straightforward, full instructions, steel spec and advice are are given

Will the roof need painting afterwards?

No, if you are fitting the short kit no.1. Yes, if you are fitting the longer kit no.2 and maybe for any custom size kit. The areas are very very small and can be "locally" sprayed which keeps costs very low.
